Enhancing Event Success
At Wesleyan, I have the privilege and honor to be a part of the men’s soccer team, but when I am not in season, I get to work for the athletic department. I have work-study here at Wesleyan, so I get to work as a proud member of the Wesleyan Athletic Department. Over the past two years, I have had the chance to do many different jobs and cover various sporting events. To name a few, shot clock and game book for men’s and women’s varsity basketball. Scoreboard and game clock for men’s lacrosse. Statistics, Music, Moving the goals, and helping the Zamboni between periods for men’s and women’s varsity hockey.

Different Roles and New Skills
Each of these roles required me to deepen my understanding of the specific needs of different sports and the ability to adapt quickly to varying demands. My adaptability has been a key factor in my success in these roles. These experiences have helped me gain a comprehensive skill set in operational support and behind-the-scenes coordination. Even though my contributions are often not visible to the public, my work ensures that athletic events run smoothly and successfully. Learning the importance of time management, organization, hard work, determination, and pride to facilitate a successful event has helped me grow.
Nescac Championship Weekend
One specific significant experience was my involvement in managing the scoreboard and game clock for the men’s Nescac lacrosse tournament. I was asked to do the scoreboard and clock for the weekend’s semi-finals and final game. The challenge of ensuring that everything ran seamlessly in a high-pressure environment taught me the critical importance of attention to detail and proactive problem-solving. Seeing the event run flawlessly and witnessing the positive reactions from these athletes, parents, and fans emphasized the impact of my role and the value of my hard work and determination. Especially getting to see the Welsyan men’s lacrosse team celebrate after the final second ran out on the clock, I felt a special honor that I was able to witness and be a part of that experience.

This role has reinforced my belief that contributing to something larger than oneself is highly rewarding, even when recognition is minimal. The true reward comes from knowing my efforts have directly contributed to the success of the events, the teams involved, and the satisfaction of everyone else. I want to take these skills and allow them to help me translate them to the work world, where I can be a hard-working and determined individual who can contribute to a great company.
